History

Gospel Baptist Church was conceived while Rev Dr Shadrach Vegah was Senior Pastor of Nkwen Baptist Church in Bamenda. He resigned from Nkwen Baptist Church to pursue further studies and mentoring in Church planting at The NETS Center for Church Planting and Revitalization in Vermont, U.S.A. In July 2010, Rev Shadrach Vegah and family returned to Cameroon to lay the groundwork for the planting of Gospel Baptist Church. The process of planting Gospel Baptist Church started in August 2010 with meeting the Board of Deacons of Christ Memorial Baptist church, Musang to request their support and partnership for the church plant. After meeting with the Board, 10 Evangelistic Bible Study leaders/mobilizers were recruited for training. The training started from September to November 2010. In December 2010, the Evangelistic Bible Study leaders planted over ten Evangelistic Bible Study groups in the targeted area of the Church plant. The Evangelistic Bible Study groups had a weekly average attendance of over one hundred persons. In March 2011, we began the Core Group meetings of Gospel Baptist Church in the house of Dr and Mrs Bomnsa Thaddeus. In these meetings, we prayed, planned and cast the vision of Gospel Baptist Church. We had 80 Core Group members. See list of Core Group Members of GBC.

In February 2011, a small piece of land was bought for the construction of Gospel Baptist Church. The money for the land was donated by The NETS Center for Church Planting and Revitalization. In May 2011, the Core Group members of Gospel Baptist Church, sister churches and friends raised about $6.800 (3.100.000F) for the construction of a temporal house of worship. The money for the building was again augmented by The NETS Center for Church Planting and Revitalization. Mr Francis Blair gave technical oversight to the construction of the temporal building. Upon the completion of the temporal wooden  building, Gospel Baptist Church was set to be launched.

On Sunday 31st of July, 2011, Gospel Baptist Church launched its first Sunday Worship service with an attendance of 392 worshipers as many CMBC members came for the launch service. Our average Sunday worship attendance grew to 550 worshipers by 2016. Every third Sunday of the month is devoted to door to door evangelism after worship service, in the different neighbourhoods of the Church. Our dream is to plant a church in every 5 to 7 years in or out of Bamenda.

The Initial Staff members of Gospel Baptist Church from its inception were: Rev Dr Shadrach Vegah (Planter), Mr Sas Blair (Evangelist and Church Technician), Ps Gabe Barnabas (Music/Worship Minister), Ps Menyong Claudius (Church Planting Intern), Mrs Bomnsa Florence (Women’s Counselor and Children’s Minister) and Mrs Mai Brenda (Church Secretary).

In 2014, GBC acquired another parcel of land (1.200square meters) just next to its temporal building. Thanks to a loan from NETS and Christ Redeemer Church in Hanover, New Hampshire. We are getting ready to commence the permanent Church building project on this parcel of land.

Gospel Baptist Church launched the Center for Church Planting and Revitalization in 2012 in preparation to launch NETS Africa Center for Church Planting and Revitalization. Gospel Baptist Church facilitated the planting of Good News Baptist Church, Maroua, Antioch Baptist Church, Dschang, New Life Baptist Church, Bamenda, Living Hope Baptist Church, Bamenda, Good News Baptist Church, Bamenda and partnered with other churches to plant Transformation Baptist Church, Back Travellers, Bamenda. Gospel Baptist Church has been involved in the revitalization of the following churches in the rural areas: Grace Baptist Church, Bandjoun, Christ Redeemer Baptist Church, Njikwa, Antioch Baptist Church, Benade, Essimbi  and Benange Baptist Church in Essimbi.

The Center for Church Planting and Revitalization or The NETS Africa Center for Church Planting and Revitalization meets on the last Thursdays of every month from 10am to 1pm for mentoring, book reviews and seminars to continue to hone and refine our church planting and revitalization skills. There are about 30 Pastors/Ministers in this center from various CBC Fields.
